| Building a Website Prior to beginning the exciting field of web design individuals should have a general concept of what constitutes an actual web page. The next section discusses some of the important aspects of building a web page: Web page title The title is the first thing that is visible when a web page is loaded on both a customer's web browser or Search Engine Spider. Search Engines review web pages and then rank the page by focusing in on your web page's title, description, meta tags, content, link popularity, etc.. You can adjust your title by editing your html title tag. The title tag is located near the top of your html source and looks like the following: <TITLE>Text </TITLE> <TITLE> - keyword 1, keyword 2, Description Once you have an appropriate title use the same list of "keywords" to write a description of the product that you are marketing. Descriptions should be no more than 2-3 brief sentences: <meta name="Description" content="Sentence one 1-2 keywords. Sentence two 1-2 keywords. Sentence three 1-2 keywords"> Meta Tags Meta Tags also play an important role in ranking and cataloging your web page. When a Web Search Engine looks at your page and prepares to catalog and rank it. Meta tags are located in the header of your web page's html source, and should look like the following: <META name="keywords" content="keyword 1, keyword 2, keyword 3, keyword 4, keyword 5, keyword 6, keyword 7">
Search Engines tend to rate web sites by the relevancy the key words. The more keywords that correlate with what the user submits to the search engine the more likely that the page will be significantly ranked. Keywords can be used up to six times in your meta tag list, Keywords should not be placed right next to each other or the search engine may not list your site. In addition the maximum limit of characters in your meta tags should be less than 1000. Domain name The domain of your website should be selected in the same fashion that the title was selected. An excellent resource for for finding significant keywords is to you the search tool at www.excite.com. Use 2-3 keywords in a catchy phrase separated by hyphens as your url. The url can be the exact same as your title, this will help with search engine optimization. www.keyword1-keyword2-keword3.com Text on the webpage In order to achieve higher rankings with the search engines, you should include a minimum of least, 100 words of text on your homepage containing the same keywords that are also found in your title, description and meta tags. Similar to your actual meta tag list you can repeat the keywords in the body text up to 6 times. Try not to repeat your keywords one right after another, separate the keywords with some relevant text. Be creative get your keywords into your website in the form of quotations or descriptions from the www.physiciansselect.co.uk site. Review the competition Visit the major search engines and do a search for the products you are marketing. See if the top websites are similar to your design? What attracts your attention to click on some websites and not others? What keywords are they using in their title and description? Review the competition's metatags, simply, go to the toolbar on your browser and select "source" and then "view" and you can review key terms of the top ranked pages. Create "intro" pages that target key words Individuals should create several "intro" pages using the various keywords in the title, description, metatags and the body of these pages. Use the different keywords the same way as described above for optimum search engine placement. Framed web pages A Framed web page consists of at least one page existing on the same page as another. This layering of web pages often confuses search engine spiders, therefore, sometimes they are unable to catalog your web page. In order to solve this problem an Individual can create a splash / welcome page for their web site. This welcome page is just a basic, non-framed, front page that has all the above entities including the web page title, meta tags and text information with a graphic link. You may also want to include special html tags that will move the user's web browser to your next page after a few seconds. If you choose to include these special tags, be sure to include a delay of at least 5 seconds before moving the user to the framed web pages.
